How to Make a Tie Dye Heart Shirt

Valentine's Day is coming up! One thing we love about Valentine's Day is dressing up. What could be more fun that a tie dye heart shirt?

We realized we've never made one on the blog. So, we thought we should show you how it's done. First, gather your supplies. You'll need tie dye (we used the girly 3-pack), a white t-shirt, a heart template, a marker, and elastics.

First, fold the shirt in half down the center and trace the heart onto the shirt. We used a marker the same color as the dye we wanted to use. But, you could also use a water-soluble fabric marker.

Next, start on one end of the heart and gather the fabric so the heart outline is lined up into a straight line.

Once you have the heart in a straight line, tie it off with an elastic. After tying it off, we decided to wet our shirt. You can choose to do it wet or dry. If you do it dry, there will be less color bleeding.

Then, you can tie the rest of the shirt into as many sections as you'd like. We decided to create 4 more sections. Spray the end section with the dye color you want your heart to be.

Dye the remaining sections how ever you'd like. We alternated between purple and turquoise. Make sure to spray some dye into some of the creases for best coverage.

When you're finished, carefully cut the elastics off and lay the shirt to dry. After it's completely dry, make sure to heat set the design by ironing thoroughly to make it permanent.

Happy Valentine's Day!
